Some of the best days out are closer than you think. Just a short drive through the beautiful Swansea Valley on the A4067, and into the incredible Brecon Beacons, underground marvels await. Beneath a quiet Welsh mountainside there is a cave system for you to discover, with plenty of surprises above ground, too.
This is Dan-yr-Ogof, the National Showcaves Centre for Wales. Three showcaves, all self-guided, for you to explore at your own pace.
Formed from a tropical seabed 315 million years ago these limestone caves have been created by underground rivers over millennia, resulting in beautiful natural caverns and twisting passageways for you to explore.
Cathedral Cave is one to remember. Undoubtedly some of nature's finest work, with enormous passageways and magnificent underground waterfalls – you won’t forget this in a hurry.
Here you can truly forget any of life’s above-ground worries…
Return to the daylight and discover even more! Set into the same mountainside, among palms and ferns with the limestone cliffs behind them, is one of the largest collections of life-sized dinosaurs in the world. Over 250 of them, appearing around corners, emerging from the ‘prehistoric’ foliage, but watch out for the ones that move. Yes, it sounds like something for the kid, but you’ll soon rediscover your inner child! You’ll definitely come away with more photos than you meant to take.
Yes. One ticket covers the caves, the dinosaurs and everything else on site. Take a break in the coffee shop, and enjoy the view, before setting off to visit the Shire Horse Centre and farm.
